…You mean to say that it is “physically” impossible for a ten year old to have a crush?!
Sansa’s eleven in A Game of Thrones and thinks she loves Joffrey. I was a fifth grade (because that’s 10 year old) girl at one point, and my friends and I definitely had crushes on guys.
It’s not wrong at all to think a 10 year old could have such feelings, they do. And it’s especially pronouncedin a series like ASoIaF where tidbits like this happen:
"My Joff and your Sansa shall join our houses, as Lyanna and I might once have done.”
This offer did surprise him. “Sansa is only eleven.”
Robert waved an impatient hand. “Old enough for betrothal. The marriage can wait a few years.” Eddard, AGoT
The only reason they consider this to be young is highborn, from great houses girls often have the luxury of waiting some time. Ned doesn’t even argue that 11 is too young for a betrothal. Because, in Westeros, it’s not. And you think a 10 year old, one year short of “old enough for a betrothal” can’t have any sort of romantic feelings?
In fact, Arya herself is betrothed by the end of AGoT, to Elmar Frey.
And Arya is sexualized a lot in the series. By Rorge, that woman in Harrenhal, the oarsman on the Titan’s Daughter, a lot of characters either threaten to rape or want to sleep with Arya during her travels. That’s just the world GRRM created, one that is based on the very true events of Medieval times, where women are sexualized at a younger age. Even when she’s still with Gendry:
An old man sat down beside her. “Well, aren’t you a pretty little peach?” His breath smelled near as foul as the dead men in the cages, and his little pig eyes were crawling up and down her. “Does my sweet peach have a name?”
For half a heartbeat she forgot who she was supposed to be. She wasn’t any peach, but she couldn’t be Arya Stark either, not here with some smelly drunk she did not know. “I’m…”
“She’s my sister.” Gendry put a heavy hand on the old man’s shoulder, and squeezed. “Leave her be.”
The man turned, spoiling for a quarrel, but when he saw Gendry’s size he thought better of it. “Your sister, is she? What kind of brother are you? I’d never bring no sister of mine to the Peach, that I wouldn’t.” He got up from the bench and moved off muttering, in search of a new friend. Arya, ASoS
Are you suggesting that this guy did not see Arya sexually? Yeah, he seems creepy, but he clearly assumes she’s a whore. He wouldn’t if she were so young that it would be weird to see her as a whore. In fact, Jeyne Poole is sold into Littlefinger’s brothels when she is about eleven.
Plus, on the subject of Arya’s age:
"[GRRM] thinks Arya is "older than some of the 40-year-olds in the book", what with all she’s gone through." (source)
What evidence do you have that I’m wrong? Did you read my post at all? I illustrate exactly how Arya and Gendry are written with “romantic undertones.” That’s just hints at romantic feelings for the record, and the text supports it.
I’m not saying that people have to ship it or anything, I’m saying writing it off as nonromantic is a product of a modern view that Westerosi people don’t have. We, people of modern times especially in developed nations, now view ten year olds as way too young for romance (even as they do have “dates” and crushes.) But in Westeros this is not at all the case. Girls are considered ready for marriage as soon as they start their periods. This is common in history, too, if you want to look it up.
And your comment about it being “physically” impossible for 10 year olds to have romantic feelings is kind of absurd given the ASoIaF story and just real life. I mean did you really go through fifth grade and never hear that whole she/he “likes you likes you” thing?
10 year olds are very capable of having crushes and romantic thoughts. The whole physically impossible bit makes no sense either since this has nothing to do with physical capabilities. You don’t “physically” have a crush after all.
Besides, while Jon remarks that she’s young (because he’s protective and loves her and Ramsay’s a sadist and a crazy person,) no one states that “Arya Stark” (aka Jeyne Poole) can’t marry Ramsay Bolton. She’s supposed to be Arya, and this happens in ADWD, so Arya would only be eleven. Sansa marries at twelve, Daenerys marries at thirteen, do you see the pattern?
But with all that, a ten year old cannot “physically” have romantic feelings. Even though Arya was supposedly wed at eleven and would be expected to have consummated that relationship.
I also think you are confusing “romantic” feelings (i.e. a crush or having thoughts about someone in a romantic light) with sexual feelings (as in wanting to sleep with the person.)
If you read my post- which is doubtful- you’ll notice I never stated that Arya had sexual feelings for him. I mentioned that the text implied she found him attractive, which is of course not the same thing.
So really, unless you can explain why you think ten year olds cannot “physically” have a crush or give me reasoning from the text that states why Arya and Gendry can’t possibly have had any feelings for each other (despite all the evidence in my post and more that I can give you,) then I have to say, I think you’re the only one who’s “wrong” here.
I told myself I wouldn’t start another story until I finish my other Gendrya one but I couldn’t help myself. This story is in Arya’s POV and it would mean a lot if others could tell me if it’s any good to read.
